Social Event: Yuelu Academy
Nestled on the serene western bank of the Xiang River in Changsha, Hunan Province, Yuelu Academy stands proudly at the eastern foothills of majestic Yuelu Mountain. This venerable institution embodies the essence of ancient Chinese scholarship, forming part of the prestigious quartet of renowned academies in Chinese history. In 1988, the State Council recognized its significance by designating Yuelu Academy as one of the third batch of National Key Cultural Units.
Originating during the Northern Song Dynasty, specifically in the ninth year of the Kaibao era (976 AD), Yuelu Academy was established through government funding, building upon the educational foundations laid by monks. The visionary Governor of Tanzhou, Zhudong, spearheaded this endeavor. Centuries later, in the 29th year of the Guangxu era (1903), it underwent a transformation, becoming Hunan Higher School.
A testament to its enduring legacy, in the eighth year of the Xiangfu era of the Northern Song Dynasty (1015 AD), Emperor Zhenzong of Song bestowed upon its headmaster, Zhu Shi, the esteemed title "Yuelu Academy," inscribed on the academy's door plaque. With a history spanning millennia, Yuelu Academy has been a continuous beacon of learning, earning it the sobriquet "Millennium University." Today, it proudly stands as a constituent college under the auspices of Hunan University.
